The Bildungsroman in a Genocidal Age

The Bildungsroman in a Genocidal Age argues that the humanist ideal of Bildung, the cultivation of the potentialities of the self through self-reflection, travel, and varied social intercourse, has been revitalized in an age of genocidal violence. It examines the Bildungsroman as a flourishing intermedial genre encompassing contemporary historical fiction, historical feature films, and children's and YA literature. Analysing a number of highly influential novels and films about the Holocaust and World War II (WWII), the book argues that the narrative strategies of the Bildungsroman, which includes a swerve away from 'home' and its parochialism and moral certainties, has contributed to shapin...

Distinctive Styles and Authorship in Alternative Comics

Distinctive Styles and Authorship in Alternative Comics addresses the benefits and limits of analyses of style in alternative comics. It offers three close readings of works serially published between 1980 and 2018 – Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Alison Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out For, and Jason Lutes’ Berlin – and discusses how artistic style may influence the ways in which readers construct authorship.

Displacement and (Post)memory in Post-Soviet Women’s Writing

The book examines prominent literary works from the past two decades by Russian women writers dealing with the Soviet past. It explores works such as Daniel Stein, Interpreter by Ludmilla Ulitskaya, The Time of Women by Elena Chizhova, Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich, and In Memory of Memory by Maria Stepanova, and uncovers connecting thematic structures and features. Focusing on the concepts of displacement and postmemory, the book shows how these works have given voice to those on the margins of society and of ‘great history’ whose resistance was often silent. In doing so, these women writers portray the everyday experiences and trauma of displaced women and girls during the second half of the twentieth century. This study offers new insights into the importance of these women writers’ work in creating and preserving cultural memory in post-Soviet Russia.

Hospitality and Hostility in the Multilingual Global Village

"This interdisciplinary, international, and multi-lingual collection of essays explores a broad range of issues related to hospitality and hostility, in literary and cultural contexts from antiquity to the present. Insightful theoretical and historical discussions undergird richly detailed particular studies. The central focus unifies the diverse pieces, which are original, well-researched and reasoned, and clearly written. A solid contribution to scholarship in several fields (including linguistics, anthropology and Internet culture), the volume is also enjoyable to read. Its lively and appealing pieces on recent novels and contemporary trends lend a fresh and contemporary feel." -ÿProf. Pamela S. Saur, Lamar University, Texas
