This book emphasizes the significance of affects, feelings and emotions in how we think about politics, gender and sexuality in Latin America. Considering the complex and even contradictory social processes that the region is experiencing today, many Latin American authors are turning to affect to find a key to understand our present situation, to revisit our history, and to imagine new possibilities for the future. Teaching STEM Education through Dialogue and Transformative Learning
This book focuses on reconceptualising the teaching of STEM education through dialogue and transformative learning, presenting examples of research from Mexico and the UK. It centres on research which introduces critical pedagogies in the teaching of STEM, where in the past there has been an over-emphasis on content and a technicist perspective on science. The research in this book considers critical and dialogic approaches to teacher education for STEM subjects and emphasises the crucial role that teachers play in improving life chances for marginalised young people and their communities. STEM education is not just a way of improving a country’s GDP, but if taught through dialogic and transformative pedagogies it can enable teachers to empower students to improve their own lives. The collaboration between these two countries is timely and comes as Mexico is developing and emerging as a key global economic nation. The work presented here engages in theoretical and empirical work that has application beyond the two countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Education for Teaching.

Memory and New Ways of Knowing
This book is a collaborative project which centres on the testimonios of more than 100 survivors of the harsh realities of the 80-year Colombian armed conflict, drawing on multiple disciplinary areas and practices: linguistics, philology and linguistics, education, journalism, academia, art and film, education, literature, human rights, sociology, urban geography, cosmogony and grassroots activism. Using extracts from testimonios in multiple forms – oral, written, film, textiles – and mobilising the concepts of Testimony, Narrative and Memory, the book explores how survivors of all ages configure and reconfigure their experiences, worldviews and identities, striving towards the building of new knowledges which will help ensure the non-repetition of violence. The book will be of interest to all who are committed to understanding conflict and post-conflict societies in the search for peace. This book will be open access under a CC BY ND licence.

Aunque probablemente siempre ha habido transexuales, la transexualidad, tal como la conocemos hoy en día (es decir, con hormonas sexuales sintéticas y cirugía de reasignación sexual), nació para el gran público de nuestra época con el espectacular regreso de Christine Jorgensen a América después de su proceso transexualizador en Dinamarca, en 1952. Norma Mejía tenía entonces 8 años y la vaga impresión, que pronto se convirtió en certeza, de que la noticia la afectaba íntimamente.
